Canadian Coast Guard Acquires Its First-Ever Autonomous Surface Vessel

Haida Gwaii’s Marine Environmental and Hazard Response unit became the first division of the Canadian Coast Guard to acquire an Autonomous Surface Vessel (ASV).

Shift Coastal Technologies and the Canadian Coast Guard’s Marty Rogers, Chief of Autonomous Systems, collaborated for two years to achieve this milestone.

The OceanSled® Ranger, a shallow water, multi-mission ASV, and the Coastal Intelligence Management System (CiMS) software were selected to meet the Canadian Coast Guard’s developing technology requirements.

The vessel is designed to handle a variety of marine emergencies, including missing person cases and coastal environmental protection. It aims to improve marine domain awareness by removing workers from hazardous nearshore and intertidal environments while integrating advanced sensors like surface and subsea cameras.

The CiMS software enhances this capability by providing real-time data insights through cloud or local deployment, helping with essential decision-making during emergencies.

Shift Coastal Technologies worked with coastal communities during the development and testing phases, including the marine team of the T’Sou-ke First Nation. The collaboration focused on long-term solutions that balanced technical innovation and cultural preservation.

The OceanSled® completed rigorous testing in Canadian territorial waters, and its modular design allows it to be equipped with various sensors for different missions.

When it arrived in the Haida Gwaii unit, the ASV was praised for its simplicity, reliability, and fast deployment, providing major benefits to emergency teams. Coast Guard personnel from the Central Division provided valuable feedback throughout the design and testing phases, frequently meeting in person and on the water to improve the overall system design.

The new technology combines aerial and surface vessel imagery and sensor data into a unified operating picture, which is a major enhancement for the Canadian Coast Guard. Shift Coastal Technologies’ future developments will be guided by ongoing testing and evaluation of the platform in remote regions across Canada.

The ASV has been designed to help skilled mariners make more informed decisions in challenging situations and improve response capabilities along Canada’s vast coastlines.
