Canadian Company Café William, known for coffee, announced the first voyage of a new cargo ship. The ship will transport the equivalent of 50 shipping containers of green coffee beans, including ones from the ANEI cooperative in Colombia, to Quebec.
It collaborated with TransOceanic Wind Transport (TOWT), which aims to decarbonise shipping through wind-powered sailing cargo ships. Now, Cafe William is set to ship ten times more beans than its trial voyage in 2023 for the company’s Wind Series.
As the first TOWT trip to Canada and the largest sailing cargo ship of the 21st century, this is a milestone in the history of maritime transportation.
“We’re thrilled to partner with TOWT to fulfill our mission of acting beyond the cup and set a precedent for other players in the sector,” said Serge Picard, Chief Innovation and Commercial Officer of Café William.
He added that it was important for the company to find another option for shipping coffee, as much of it is transported in ships running on fossil fuels.
The first trip showed that wind power could be used to bring coffee beans to Canada, but these much bigger ships will enable them to sustain operations and move forward to zero-emission coffee shipping.
Guillaume Le Grand, Co-founder and CEO of TOWT, added that they aim to revolutionise the maritime sector with the inaugural journey of their first TOWT Sailing Cargo Ship.
Some beans are from the ANEI Cooperative that strives to rebuild and strengthen the indigenous communities of Colombia.
Cafe William is one of the main organic and fairtrade importers of coffee, which comes from farms where farmers are fairly compensated and have stable livelihoods. Organic beans are free of chemicals and pesticides.
Julie Francoeur, CEO of Fairtrade Canada, said the partnership between Cafe William and ANEI Cooperative is an example of Fairtrade’s goal of fostering relationships between businesses and coffee growers that have a positive impact on people and the earth.
After reaching Canada, beans will be roasted at Cafe William’s facility in Quebec, home to the world’s first 100% electric industrial coffee roaster with an annual capacity of 20 million pounds of coffee.
Hence, coffee lovers can sip the limited edition Wind Series this winter, featuring beans from the ANEI cooperative at Canada’s Costco stores. They can also purchase the sustainable collection from the Café William website.
