Oil Tanker Catches Fire While Anchored Off Singapore’s East Johor Strait

A fire erupted in the engine room of the Malta-flagged oil tanker MED ATLANTIC while the vessel was anchored in the East Johor Strait within Singapore waters on October 21, 2024.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) was notified of the incident at around 10:30 a.m.

An emergency response team, including an MPA Patrol craft, two Police Coast Guard vessels, two tugboats, and three marine firefighting and rescue vessels from the Singapore Civil Defence Force, was soon dispatched to the scene.

These vessels were deployed to put down the fire and ensure navigational safety in the area.

The 22 crew members onboard the vessel at the time of the incident were successfully evacuated from the tanker, and no injuries were reported.

The tanker is still anchored, and there has been no impact on nearby shipping traffic. MPA has issued navigational warnings advising vessels to stay clear of the affected area.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Food Agency is monitoring the situation closely and has advised nearby fish farms to take precautionary measures.

The tanker, registered to Malta-based Sea Tankers 4 Pte Ltd, is being monitored while authorities work to fully resolve the situation.
