A heavy lift ship, registered in China which was earlier involved in an accident at Keelung Port, Taiwan, ran aground along Taiwan’s coast due to rough weather.
The 17-member crew was safely rescued by Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration’s (CGA) patrol boat and brought to shore in the Keelung Port, after the ship Yu Zhou Qi Hang, with 3 ship-to-shore container cranes was caught in rough seas as a result of Typhoon Kong-rey.
Images and videos circulating on social media showed the ship in rough weather and later grounded against rocks meanwhile one of its loaded cranes collapsed.
The ship had left Taiwan’s Keelung Port and was headed to Zhangzhou, in China’s Fujian Province. However, a few hours into its journey, the ship was caught up in massive waves 2.4 nm northwest of Cape Yehiliu amid powerful winds and drifted dangerously close to the coast.
The CGA sent tugboats to help but they could not do anything in such bad weather and by evening the captain and crew had to abandon it.
This grounding is the second incident which involved the ship Yu Zhou Qi Hang this month. On October 14, it collided with a gantry crane at Port of Keelung’s berth when it was trying to dock.
This led to the collapse of one crane at the berth and resulted in damage to another onboard the ship. No injuries or oil spills were reported.
