Watch: Leaking Cargo Ship Lists & Drifts Dangerously Off Java Coast, 18 Crew Saved

Indonesian authorities successfully rescued 18 crew members from a cargo ship after it began listing near Madura Island on January 18, 2025.

The vessel, Suryani Ladjoni, a general cargo ship built in 1977, with a deadweight of 2,380 tons started taking on water and listed 25-degree to port. It was on its way from Banjarmasin to Surabaya.

The rescue operation began early in the morning when the captain of Suryani Ladjoni reported to the authorities that water was flooding the ship.

At around 06:00 local time, the captain informed rescue teams that the vessel was leaking from several points, including the keel and both sides, causing the severe list.

The Tanjung Perak Port Authority and local rescue teams were immediately notified, and a swift response was initiated.

The patrol boat KM Palung Mas was dispatched to assist. It reached the coordinates of the stricken vessel but initially had to anchor 2.5 cables away due to rough weather conditions.

Despite this, the rescue team worked closely with the captain of Suryani Ladjoni to ensure that the crew would safely abandon the ship.

Later it was decided that the crew would evacuate using liferafts. By 08:45 local time, all 18 crew members, including the captain, had safely boarded the liferafts.

They were then transferred to KM Palung Mas, which transported them to Teluk Lamong Port.

No injuries or casualties were reported. The survivors received medical treatment once they arrived at the port. While the ship did not sink, it is drifting eastward at a slow speed of 0.2 knots.

Authorities have issued warnings to nearby vessels about the danger posed by the drifting vessel. Investigations are underway to assess the damage caused by the leak.
