Naval Force Rescues Yemeni Fishing Boat Hijacked By Somali Pirates

A Yemeni fishing boat, Al Najma, hijacked near Eyl on the northern coast of Puntland, Somalia, has been safely released after an intervention by EUNAVFOR ATALANTA. The vessel was targeted in an armed robbery at sea on February 8, 2025.

Upon receiving reports of the attack, EUNAVFOR ATALANTA immediately deployed its naval and air assets to locate the fishing boat.

After an extensive search, the forces found the vessel sailing dangerously close to the Somali coastline. The presence of an ATALANTA helicopter played a crucial role in ensuring the pirates fled the scene.

Once the boat was secured, ATALANTA’s boarding team inspected the vessel and confirmed that all 12 crew members were safe with no reported injuries.

However, before abandoning the dhow, the hijackers stole personal belongings from the crew and took two skiffs.

The naval team collected all available evidence for further investigation. Additionally, the Al Najma required technical assistance due to an engine malfunction, which was provided by ATALANTA forces.

Throughout the mission, EUNAVFOR ATALANTA maintained communication and coordination with regional maritime security partners, including the Somali authorities, the Yemeni Coast Guard, and the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).

Intelligence was also exchanged with a Japanese Maritime Patrol Reconnaissance Aircraft to ensure a comprehensive response.

EUNAVFOR ATALANTA continues to monitor the region for any piracy-related activities and urges all merchant and fishing vessels to register with the Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean (MSCIO) under the Voluntary Registration Scheme (VRS) for improved security and rapid assistance in case of threats.
