Indian Navy To Induct Powerful Underwater Mine After Successful Test

India has successfully test-fired its indigenously developed underwater weapon system, the Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM), which is now ready for induction into the Indian Navy.

The announcement came after a series of combat firing trials using reduced explosives were carried out by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy.

The advanced naval mine is designed to detect and neutralise modern stealth ships and submarines. Equipped with multi-sensor capabilities, the MIGM can track acoustic, magnetic, pressure, and electric field signatures emitted by marine vessels.

The technology allows it to perform effectively in complex maritime environments, giving India a strategic advantage in undersea warfare.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the MIGM system was developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with other DRDO labs, including the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory in Pune and the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Chandigarh.

The production of the mine will be handled by Bharat Dynamics Limited, Visakhapatnam, and Apollo Microsystems Limited, Hyderabad.

The system also features advanced electronics, including ARM-based processors and peripheral devices, that support real-time data acquisition and processing.

After the successful trial, DRDO officials confirmed that the mine is now ready for operational deployment by the Indian Navy.

The defence ministry discussed the significance of this capability, noting it would enhance the Navy’s ability to respond to undersea threats with greater precision.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also appreciated the joint efforts of DRDO, the Indian Navy, stating that the induction of MIGM will boost India’s self-reliance in critical underwater warfare technologies.
