Russian Navy Conducts Baltic Sea Drills To Counter Underwater Saboteurs

The Russian Navy carried out a military exercise in the Baltic Sea focusing on countering underwater sabotage and enemy drone attacks, the Defence Ministry said on Friday.

The drills involved navy divers who practiced detecting and capturing groups of underwater saboteurs. As part of the training, the units also used first-person view (FPV) drones to target and destroy unmanned boats simulating enemy forces.

The ministry stated that the exercise was designed to test and evaluate the combat readiness of the navy’s anti-submarine sabotage defence units.

Footage released by the defence ministry showed Admiral Alexander Moiseyev, commander of the Russian Navy, inspecting the operations. The exercise also included a scenario where forces defended a military airfield from enemy drone strikes.

This was the second time in August that Russia carried out naval drills with an anti-submarine focus. On August 1, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had ordered two American nuclear submarines to move closer to Russian territory.

Days later, in the first week of the month, Russian and Chinese naval forces held joint exercises in the Sea of Japan, where they practiced hunting and destroying an enemy submarine.
