Port Of Tyne Unveils UK’s First Electric Foiling Pilot Boat On River Thames

The Port of Tyne and Artemis Technologies have showcased electric foiling technologies on the River Thames ahead of the delivery of the UK’s first electric pilot boat to the Tyne in 2026.

Powered by Artemis eFoiler® technology, the vessel will provide zero-emission operations, improved safety, efficiency, and enhanced comfort for crews, marking a major step in maritime decarbonisation. This innovation highlights the Port’s commitment to cleaner, smarter operations and demonstrates the power of partnership in driving the UK’s transition to net zero.

Port of Tyne and Artemis Technologies showcase electric foiling technology on the River Thames, ahead of delivery to the Tyne

Earlier this year, the Port of Tyne became the first port in the UK to invest in a fully electric foiling pilot boat, designed and built by Belfast-based Artemis Technologies.

This week, the state-of-the-art Artemis eFoiler® technology, which will be powering the pilot boat that is set to join the Port of Tyne’s fleet in 2026, has taken to the River Thames for an international showcase set against the backdrop of Tower Bridge. The Artemis EF-12 Pilot vessel, scheduled to be introduced to the Port next year will take up residence on the River Tyne, where it will continue the Ports strategy to deliver cleaner, safer and more innovative port operations.

The Artemis eFoiler® technology was displayed at a series of exclusive receptions in London. Using advanced hydrofoiling technology to lift its hull above the water, it delivers significant energy savings, enhanced stability and a step change in the ride comfort of pilots and vessel crews. The zero operational emission electric foiling pilot vessel on course for Tyne is helping the port to deliver on its journey to become net zero.

The showcase was co-hosted by Matt Beeton, Chief Executive Officer of Port of Tyne, and CEO of Artemis Technologies, Iain Percy OBE, alongside government representatives and industry leaders.
