Iran has warned that it will attack Israel, US military bases and shipping in the Middle East if the United States launches a military strike against the country, as President Donald Trump considers possible action during Iran’s most serious anti-government protests in years.
The warning was issued by Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, during a session broadcast live on state television. He said Iran would not wait to respond if attacked and would retaliate immediately.
According to reports, he stated that Israel, American military installations and shipping in the region would be treated as legitimate targets is US attacks Iran.
His comments marked a sharp rise in tensions as protests continued across Iran, challenging the theocratic system that has governed the country since the 1979 revolution. During the parliamentary session, lawmakers were seen chanting anti-US slogans.
The protests have now entered their second week, with people continuing to demonstrate despite an internet shutdown imposed by the authorities. Human rights groups have warned that security forces are using lethal force to suppress the unrest.
The US-based Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) said it had received eyewitness accounts and reliable reports suggesting that hundreds of protesters have been killed.
The organisation said hospitals were overwhelmed, blood supplies were running low, and many protesters had been shot in the eyes, which it said appeared to be a deliberate tactic. It called on the international community to act to prevent further loss of life.
The unrest has continued as President Donald Trump considers possible military action against Iran.
Although no decision has been announced, the possibility of a US strike has increased fears of a wider conflict, especially after Iran warned it would respond by targeting American and Israeli positions across the Middle East.
Iranian authorities have described the protests as a threat to national security. However, demonstrators are increasingly calling for political change, rather than protesting only over economic issues.
Israel has reportedly placed its military on high alert, concerned that any US strike on Iran could quickly lead to retaliation. Israeli sources said there are fears that Iran could target Israel and US forces based in the region.
The situation has also raised concerns for regional maritime security, as Iran has warned that shipping in the Middle East could be targeted if hostilities escalate.
