Maersk has received Tangier Mærsk, the first ship in a new series of six mid-size container vessels.
The delivery took place at the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group yard in Jingjiang, China, and the vessel arrived three months ahead of schedule.
The six ships are part of Maersk’s ongoing fleet renewal programme, which aims to strengthen the company’s competitiveness and help achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 through new vessels and low-emission fuels.
Each vessel has a capacity of 9,000 TEU and is equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of running on methanol.
On its maiden voyage, Tangier Mærsk will call at Shanghai before joining Maersk’s TP15 service, which connects East Asia with the US Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal.
Per reports, four more vessels from the series are due later this year, with the final ship expected in early 2027.
Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, a major shipbuilder in Jiangsu province, builds container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, and gas vessels for international clients along the Yangtze River.
Maersk operates globally, providing container shipping, terminal operations, freight forwarding, warehousing, and supply chain services in more than 130 countries, employing around 100,000 people and serving industrial, retail, and consumer sectors worldwide.
