At least 15 people have died after a passenger ferry capsized on the Nile River in Sudan on Wednesday, according to a medical group.
The ferry was carrying at least 27 people, including women and children, when it sank in the Shendi district of northern Nile River province.
The Sudan Doctors Network, which monitors developments related to the country’s ongoing war, reported that 15 bodies had been recovered.
The group said six people survived the accident. It also stated that residents and rescue teams were continuing to search for at least six others who remain missing.
According to the Sudan Doctors Network, authorities have been urged to send specialised rescue teams and proper equipment to speed up the search operations.
Boat accidents are not uncommon in Sudan. Similar tragedies involving overloaded vessels have occurred in the past, as safety measures are often ignored on the country’s waterways.
The cause of the capsising has not yet been officially confirmed. Search efforts were still ongoing at the time of reporting.
