Around 30 Commercial Ships Anchor Around Gabon As The Nation Shuts Down After Coup

At least 30 commercial vessels dropped their anchors on Wednesday close to Gabon’s waters after the military officers mentioned that they had seized power in the Central African nation, per data and other maritime sources.

Military officers in oil-producing Gabon mentioned that they had kept President Ali Bongo under strict house arrest after the nation’s election body declared that he won a third term. Borders were shut down, and state institutions were also dissolved.

There was a build-up of vessels already, backed up on Wednesday.

The vessels included some commercial cargo vessels as well as tankers. They had stopped close to the nation’s major ports, including Owendo, near Libreville’s capital. Port Gentil further to the south, ship tracking data from analytics major MarineTraffic reflected on Wednesday.

A British maritime security firm named Ambrey mentioned that port operations in Libreville had halted, and no vessels had reached or set sail from the port since the declaration of the coup.
