MOL To Install Captain’s Eye AI System In Its LNG-fueled Car Carriers

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) plans to use cameras and an artificial intelligence (AI) system created by Captain’s Eye to improve fire detection capabilities in the cargo holds of its LNG-fueled car carriers. The goal of this action is to give early fire hazard detection.

Ten boats now on order will have the equipment installed by 2024 or later. MOL is also thinking about adding this cutting-edge equipment to already-existing vessels.

When the installed cameras recognise unusual visuals, the Captain’s Eye AI system notifies the aboard crew and the onshore ship management firm.

The AI-based system is expected to increase significantly smoke detection speed, even though MOL’s car carriers now have fire alarms (smoke detectors).

In addition, the system facilitates instantaneous access to cargo hold visuals from both onboard and ashore locations, hence expediting response times in the case of a fire-related incident.

Captain’s Eye artificial intelligence systems are extensively used on commercial ships worldwide. They were first intended to identify abnormalities in engine rooms and on decks.

MOL and Captain’s Eye worked together to do demonstration testing of the AI system’s smoke detection capabilities in the ONYX ACE car carrier’s cargo holds.

After undergoing several tests, the device was found to be successful in detecting even minute levels of smoke. As a result, MOL has chosen to equip its car carriers with the Captain’s Eye technology.

MOL Group aims to acquire two more boats in addition to the eight announced on May 9, 2022, as part of its commitment to upgraded fire prevention measures in cargo holds. This is part of the group’s objective to attain ’90 LNG-fueled boats by 2030.’
