The Indian Navy plans to launch an ergonomic overall for female personnel working on board warships.
This comes after women were recently admitted to the personnel below officer rank (PBOR) cadre, and more women are expected to join this cadre in the upcoming years.
According to officials, the new fire-retardant overalls, which are required workwear for warship personnel, are intended to improve women’s comfort and address the physiological difficulties associated with working in a fast-paced environment.
The Navy is taking proactive steps to guarantee its female officers’ and sailors’ convenience and well-being. It is the first of the three services to include women in the PBOR cadre across all streams.
It has also been confirmed that uniforms for all sailors and officers, regardless of gender, will be the same.
Throughout the design process of the new overalls, feedback from numerous naval commands and establishments has been actively sought. About 40 female officers currently serve on warships, a substantial change from 2021, when the Navy assigned four female officers to warships following a nearly 25-year break.
Considering the roles and responsibilities that women officers and sailors have on the job, the new overalls are being developed to meet their specific needs.
The stealth destroyer Imphal, which has separate quarters for female sailors, was recently delivered to the navy, demonstrating even more of their commitment to gender equality.
Although women officers on warships already have separate sleeping quarters, this is a significant advancement for women serving as enlisted personnel.
Interestingly, the navy is also changing the PBOR cadre rank designations to be gender-neutral. After thoroughly examining the British-inherited ranks, the navy is ready to replace them with Indianized titles.
This program is part of a more significant attempt to eliminate colonial military customs and encourage diversity among the ranks.
