Technology company Wärtsilä introduced the marine industry’s first ammonia fuel-based four-stroke engine solution. Also meeting the growing need for green fuels, this invention represents a major advancement in environmentally friendly shipping practices.
The first company to benefit from this ammonia solution is expected to be Viridis Bulk Carriers, the first-ever zero-emission shipping company in the world.
Viridis Bulk Carriers, an alliance of Navigare Logistics, Amon Maritime and Mosvolds Rederi, seeks to transform the European short-sea bulk market by offering an ammonia-powered, carbon-free transportation service on newly built vessels.
A Letter of Intent for Wärtsilä 25 ammonia engine solution has been signed by Wärtsilä and Viridis Bulk Carriers, with plans to finalise a commercial contract.
The board member of Viridis Bulk Carriers, André Risholm, praised the industry’s adoption of ammonia as essential to reaching the Paris Agreement’s emission reduction targets.
Wärtsilä’s CEO and President, Håkan Agnevall, emphasised the company’s dedication to guiding the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in the marine sector.
Wärtsilä 25 engine, NOR (NOx Reducer) and the WARMS (Wärtsilä Ammonia Release Mitigation System) for effective exhaust are all part of the comprehensive solution. The maintenance agreement and advanced automation system give priority to safety and efficiency.
The seamless transition of crew members to ammonia as a fuel is further ensured by committed training and round-the-clock international support.
The versatility of the Wärtsilä 25 engine was particularly highlighted by the President of Wärtsilä’s Marine Power, Roger Holm, who noted that it can run on a variety of eco-friendly fuels.
This ammonia solution positions the Wärtsilä 25 as a flexible and future-ready engine platform by expanding upon Wärtsilä’s LNG system.
When compared to a diesel solution of similar size, the Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia solution provides an instant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of over 70%, meeting the target of IMO for 2040 and current EU targets through 2050.
Wärtsilä Marine Power Supply Vice President Stefan Nysjö highlighted that this achievement is the beginning.
With more ammonia engines planned for the future, Wärtsilä remains committed to ongoing research and development of technologies that can lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The article highlights Wärtsilä’s pioneering role in steering the marine sector toward low-emission and sustainable solutions.
