Singapore’s First Fully Electric Cargo Vessel Unveiled

The official launch of the Hydromover by Yinson GreenTech (YGT), a well-known supplier of green technology solutions, and the Goal Zero Consortium, headed by SeaTech Solutions, represents a significant turning point in the decarbonisation of Singapore’s maritime sector. With its innovative design and interchangeable battery solutions, this 18.5-meter fully electric cargo vessel is poised to transform the industry entirely.

The first project ready for commercial trials is the Hydromover, which results from Goal Zero’s submission under the joint call for proposals from the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

YGT led program management, system solutions, and commercialisation; vessel design was led by SeaTech, and battery technology was partnered with Shift Clean Energy.

With zero emissions and the potential to save operating costs by up to 50% compared to conventional vessels, this innovative vessel is expected to carry up to 25 tonnes of cargo. With a combined fleet of over 150 vessels, five partners have indicated their intent to charter the Hydromover for operational trials, demonstrating a significant opportunity for future electric vessel conversions.

RINA Hong Kong, Limited Singapore Branch, gave YGT the Certificate of Classification at the launch ceremony, certifying that the Hydromover complies with all international safety regulations and RINA Rules for battery-powered vessels.

To produce a comprehensive digital twin of the vessel, YGT plans to use the Hydromover as a “living lab” for research and development, working with organisations like the Singapore Institute of Technology and the Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore.

Built entirely in Singapore, the Hydromover results from local companies working together. YGT intends to investigate additional collaborations and knowledge-sharing programs within the sector to consistently improve and modernise the ship, bolster Singapore’s leadership in marine-related green technology and fortify its position as a hub.

Eirik Barclay, the CEO of YGT, expressed his excitement for the historic occasion and emphasised the value of strategic alliances. He saw signs of activity from the region, including conversations with Indonesian entities regarding the use of Hydromover for backwater transportation and the energisation of neighbouring fishing vessels.

The fact that YGT is positioned as a pioneer in pursuing net-zero emissions by 2050 was also emphasised by Barclay, who highlighted ongoing negotiations with possible equity partners and helpful financing partners such as UOB.
