Seafarers Happiness Index Record Third Consecutive Decline In 2023

The Seafarers Happiness Index, a quarterly survey sponsored by NorthStandard and Idwal with assistance from Inmarsat and carried out by The Mission to Seafarers, has found a concerning pattern of declining seafarer happiness.

According to the most recent report, which covers the third quarter of 2023, seafarer happiness decreased to 6.6 out of 10—the third consecutive quarter of decline.

The Q3 report shows a decline in seafarers’ satisfaction concerning pay, workload and connectivity.

Interestingly, onboard connectivity saw the most significant drop in satisfaction.

A few improvements have also been reported regarding food, training, and shore leave.

The report raised concerns about insufficient compensation, especially for senior positions, and the effect of catering budget restrictions on nutrition.

Another concern was the regular maintenance of the onboard exercise facilities and gyms.

With the expansion of regulations and administrative responsibilities, seafarers have reported problems of excessive workload and stress.

Discussions about cultural and social issues included gender inequality and barriers to diversity. Women who work as seafarers encounter discomfort, discrimination, and a lack of acceptance.

Even though being a seafarer has many benefits and drawbacks, some survey participants acknowledged that the lifestyle still offers adventure and a steady income.
